Over the last two years,
the Mount Sinai Diabetes Center faculty and staff participated in the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) annual 5k walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. We had
a great team including administrative staff, researchers, and physicians, all
dedicated to changing the future of type 1 diabetes.
In the two years, the Mount Sinai Team for the Cure lead by Dr.Adolfo Garcia Ocana and Dr. Carol Levy raised more than $8000, the highest of any other hospital group in New York City, thanks to the support of the generous Mount Sinai community. The JDRF is a leader in funding type 1 diabetes research with the ultimate mission of ending type 1 diabetes. They currently provide funding for research projects in 17 countries. Presently they are funding research projects in areas such as artificial pancreas systems, smart insulin (a form of insulin that turns on and off in response to blood sugar levels) and therapies that improve eye disease related to diabetes. Many of these therapies may also have the potential to translate into therapies for managing other types of diabetes.
